Foundation has easily been the hardest item to find for my makeup collection.

I have tried at least 15 foundations in the last year, and nothing has seemed to work for my skin. There are so many concerns that arise when finding the perfect foundation: night and day use, color, longevity, matte or luminous finish, powder, liquid, and how will it react with my skin type.

foundation02The list could go on forever when looking for your Holy Grail foundation. So let’s start with the basic necessity from a foundation: finding a color that matches your skin tone.

In makeup stores there are usually tester bottles and compacts. When you are in-store shopping, try testing out a foundation on your neck or shoulder. The goal when picking out a foundation is to match your face to your neck/ body.

In the past, I have always tried to match a color to my face tone. This leads to having foundations that are too light and too dark. For many people, their face tones are uneven. People have light spots, dark spots, redness, under eye circles, and discoloration.

If all else fails, or if you feel like your eyes are playing you, visit with employees at the makeup counter. Stores that carry makeup lines have staff trained to identify the perfect match for customers. This has worked for me at some stores, as most of the time they are not too far off. Employees can at least point you in the right direction.

Finding the right foundation requires patience and time. Take your time looking, and experimenting with what works for you. Don’t forget that Sephora has a great return policy, and always get SAMPLES!
